Afterschool/Summer Program Coordinator
The coordinator’s task is to develop and implement effective out-of-school-time programming for Partnership students. The coordinator will work with principals and site coordinators to create meaningful afterschool and summer sessions that are aligned with academic and data driven instruction and that provide students with opportunities to learn new skills and explore the world around them.
Rutgers University, Camden
An official work study site for Rutgers University, students at the 5 Partnerships Schools receive high quality weekly after-school tutoring from Rutgers students.
Aviation
The CPS Aviation Club will provides 6th-8th grade students with a safe, academic enrichment experience via learning about aviation. Each school will has a crew (one adult mentor and five to ten students) that meets weekly, after-school for 2 hours from mid-January through mid-May culminating in a competition event between the five crews. The Crews will use a modified version of the Wild Blue Wonders Curriculum, which breaks aviation down into various components that are aligned with the National Content Standards. It will provide opportunities for academic enrichment in science, technology, engineering, math, and the arts.
The students have the opportunity to fly with a certified pilot through the Young Eagles Association. In 2010-2011, 18 students completed the program and participated in the Young Eagles flights.
First Lego League Robotics
A team of students from each of the 5 schools explore science and technology through the First Lego League Robotics program. Kids engage in research, problem-solving, engineering, and friendly competition. Thanks to the involvement of Mount St. Joseph Academy in Flourtown, Pa., and engineers from Campbell Soup.
Civic Engagement
Recognizing that a civic identity is an important aspect of a child’s overall socialization process, the Catholic Partnership Schools are implementing a Civic Engagement after-school program. The initial program was piloted during the Soaring Through Summer Program. The five-week course on Civic Engagement taught students how to thoughtfully, responsibly, and effectively participate in the life of the community. A similar, year-long course will be implemented in at least two of the Catholic Partnership Schools with the hope of expanding the program into each of the Partnership schools by Spring 2012.
Ed Snider Youth Hockey
Snider Hockey helps to educate young people to succeed in the game of life. Partnering with schools and community organizations, Snider Hockey’s goal is to impact the lives of underserved children through programs that incorporate both on-ice and off-ice recreational and academic activities and services. Through these programs, boys and girls develop life-enhancing values such as teamwork, positive self-esteem, a strong work ethic, and respect for themselves and others.
Boys & Girls Basketball
Physical activity and safe places to play are an integral part of growing and learning. Several years ago Judyann McCarthy had the vision to create a Boys & Girls Basketball Program. This program, led by Mrs. McCarthy and with the support of many volunteers, provides the 6th through 8th grade children of the Catholic Partnership Schools with the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of basketball, engage in teamwork, and develop a regular routine of physical activity.
Catholic Partnership Schools Choir
Each Partnership school has a choir that performs at school Mass and other school events. The Catholic Partnership Schools Choir is made up of 6th through 8th grade students from each of the five schools. The CPS Choir debuted in November 2010 at the Catholic Leadership Institute Dinner. The 2011-2012 school year brings with it a new CPS Music Director who will partner with the music teachers in the CPS to continue to build the CPS Choir and to present them with new opportunities and experiences in choral development and performance.
Instrumental Music Program & Symphony in C
Symphony in C is a professional orchestra under the direction of Maestro Rossen Milanov with a strong Professional Development Internship Program at its core. Symphony in C helped the Catholic Partnership Schools to begin an instrumental program in each of the schools during the 2010-2011 school year. As of February 2011, each Partnership School began an instrumental class for ten 4th & 5th Grade students. Each school housed a particular instrument family – percussion, strings, brass, and woodwinds. The program will continue to grow this year under the leadership of Mariko Kisada, the CPS Music Director, and in conjunction with Symphony in C.
